Twitter

After a gap of almost two years, I've decided to properly use Twitter.

For how long, who knows?

I've also added a Twitter feed.

The Freedom Bill

The Lib Dems have launched what they are calling the Freedom Bill. Essentially it's a follow on from their 2006 Great Repeal Bill, which unfortunately died a death.

The full text of the proposed Bill is available on a website that they have set up and you can leave comments and suggestions.

I've had a brief comparision of this and the 2006 Bills and for some reason they have decided to omit the scrapping of heresay evidence although this could fall within the scrapping of "evidence of bad behaviour".

Unfortunately, they have ignored my suggestion from the previous Bill to scrap the Anti-Social Behaviour and Racial & Religious Hatred Acts in full and s. 76 Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 but they have agreed to scrap the Ministerial veto in the Freedom of Information Act, possibly due to the last few days... I've left a comment on the Lib Dems' page about the omissions also suggesting that they should also add the ban on "violent pornography".

There's more over on Spy Blog.

I get email

Just received this email from someone who goes by the name "Everet Weisgerber":
patioss disentangled psycho deadstarting

Clearly it's spam, but does anyone have any idea what it could possibly mean?

The Sun Lies: The Sun - Tabloid Lies

I've a new post over on the Sun Lies with a self-explanatory title. It concerns a story that was in the Sun last March and how they have admitted to libelling a Muslim bus driver.

Open-Source.gov.uk

There has been a rare outbreak of intelligence from our government. It has announced that it will increasing use open-source software.

As someone who chooses to use open-source (OpenOffice.org, Firefox and GIMP; not Linux - I lack the technical skills!) I'm more than happy to support the government on this because it will save the taxpayer a lot of money due to a lack of licensing fees.

Now... how about scrapping crown copyright? After all, it has been more than 15 months since the petition closed, yet a response has not yet been forthcoming.

Patrick F. McCartan kills the Internet

From the Consumerist:

Jones Day is a law firm that doesn't want anyone else to use standard, everyday formatting for links in news stories about its staff, and it succeeded in forcing a small start-up to cave in to its demands.

Here's Jones Day's claim in a nutshell:

The first link below is trademark infringement, says Jones Day, because it confuses people by implying that the lawyer in question is affiliated with (in this example) Consumerist.com. The second link is only acceptable because it visibly displays the full url as the link.

This is what gives lawyers a bad name...

Introducing the Daily Police Photo blog

You may have heard of the fact that as of next Monday 16th February, it will be illegal to take a photograph of the police within the UK on the grounds of preventing terrorism due to the enforcement of section 76 Counter-Terrorism Act 2008.

As a response of this completely stupid and pointless law (what else do we expect from this government?) a mass photography session is taking place outside New Scotland Yard in Westminster.

To co-inside with this event and the law, I've created the Daily Police Photo blog. As the name suggests, the aim is to, well, have a photograph of the police uploaded everyday.
